Craft Room Storage

Since I am tired of going to the store three times a day (when I said that out loud at dinner, B responded with, "Victory is MINE!" Apparently he hates me going to the store three times a day, too...), I spend yesterday morning while Jamie was in school working on the office/craft room and the contents of it's closet. Last night B was very helpful in weeding things out, and this morning I took a lot of old computer/stereo parts and cords to the electronic waste dump. It was pretty funny going through "the history of technology" last night! Once I got it done and as much as I could neatly placed back in the closet, I realized that for the most part, my craft stuff is just in boxes and not really all that accessible.

I also realized I haven't raved out Pinterest on this blog - I feel like everyone else has on their blog, so now it's my turn! If you haven't checked it out, Pinterest is basically an electronic bulletin board where you can "pin" fun things you see on the internet. Much like ripping a page out of a magazine and tacking it to ye olde cork board (remember doing that?)

So today I went to Pinterest and typed in "craft storage" - here's the most personally inspiring of what I found (and a little critique):

If I had the space, I'd be all over it, but I don't so this is firmly in the "dream" category! It has a place for *everything* and some clear storage to boot. The iMac pictured would probably get in the way of sewing, but fortunately for me, I don't have that problem - I'm on a Macbook, so it can go safely into a drawer or off to the side if I were to pull out my sewing machine (which in this room woiuld go great in that last tall white drawer on the right!)

Now this would call for a combination of two of my passions - crafting and making furniture! This is just a computer armoire, complete with the pull out shelf, locked and loaded for crafting! The downside is that I don't have that kind of room in here. But that doesn't stop me from eyeballing every computer armoire I see at the thrift store!

This room definitely meets my criteria for "double duty" - it has the sewing machine and the computer, and all of the craft supplies are out of the way but not necessarily out of reach.

Throwing this suggestion out there for my mother-in-law and anyone else who has to craft out of their guest room closet - the downside is there is no real table space (that bottom shelf is too high, but that's not to say that it couldn't be done!), but there is some great storage ideas, plus the curtains keep the messy stuff hidden (want to bet that's where she hides her husband's stuff?)

This looks like something I would do, but not necessarily how I would do it. I'm the anal-retentive type, so I'd most likely have everything in here in identical labeled boxes. But this does look like a good solution for my space!

Speaking of my space, might as well let you see it as-is right now:

Sorry about the camera phone photos, but I am too busy to hunt down the actual camera!

  2. A great solution to adding a table to the craft-room-as-a-closet idea - do a folding table attached the closet door -- much like a fold-down ironing board! You can make it with simple brackets attached to the door with a pole underneath to stabilize it to the floor.
